One hundred days of pie No.39 The Pound Bakery Chip Chop Curry Pie
· admin
You might recall a few blogs back I mentioned the bad press that Greggs get, simply for their mass market domination of the steak bake sector.
To be honest, there is another company that have emerged in the North West which has also taken a bit of stick for it's bold, affordable approach.
But what's the problem here? People in the North West like eating PIES and the POUND BAKERY simply makes the money in their pockets go a little further.
What is there to dislike about a place that serves up a hot pie for a quid? Not much, until you discover that actually - you get TWO PIES FOR A QUID.
A few years back when I was working in Wigan, there was a Hampsons Bakery where the Pound Bakery stands now (as Hampsons created the Pound Bakery). For a while, they did a deal where they offered FOUR meat and potato pies for a £1.
Well I wasn't going to turn down that challenge. Although I at least had the decency to take them home for fear of repulsing the ladies in the office. The first two slipped down with ease, I found a bit of resistance of munching on the third and by the time I got to the fourth, I started to feel distinctly nauseous and decided that enough was enough.
My point? Apart from the fact that I am a greedy get? People will only eat what they can manage and generally stop when they've had enough.

So the Pound Bakery should be applauded for bringing pastry products to the masses at an affordable prices in these times of austerity. And it's not cheap and nasty, their stuff is generally OK, backed as it is by two long standing North West heavyweights in Scouse Sayers and Bolton based Hampsons.
I mean they do a CHIP SHOP CHICKEN CURRY PIE for heaven's sake, what can you possibly dislike about that.
I'd have liked a bit more of a kick to it but it had flavour, a reasonable meat content and there appears to be an added piece of crust stuck to the top. Fifty pence and you get some bonus pastry!
